Dear Parents and Carers,

Last Friday (26^th July) was the feast of St Anne and St Joachim. St Anne and St Joachim were the parents of Mary and grandparents of Jesus. With such amazing offspring, Joachim and Anne must share an extraordinary love. They have long been held up as exemplars for married couples, and in fact, they are one of the few married couple saints cannonised in the Catholic Church.

We know very few facts about Sts. Anne and Joachim, the only recorded stories of them are from an apocryphal gospel dating from the 4th Century AD called the Protoevangelium of James. The legend told in this document says that after years of childlessness, an angel appeared to tell Anne and Joachim that they would have a child. Whatever their names or the facts of their lives, we can assume that Mary was raised in a Jewish family home faithful to God and to the religious traditions of her day.  As such, she was led to respond wholeheartedly to God’s request with faith, “Let it be done to me as you will.”

Talk about being blessed!
Not only did Joachim and Anne raise a sinless daughter, they also scored a perfect grandson! With such holiness among their offspring, they could be forgiven for having a spiritual inferiority complex. Yet, by all accounts, Joachim and Anne performed their parenting responsibilities with grace. Their feast day on July 26th is a day to honour them and all grandparents for their contribution to our lives. This Friday we will honour our wonderful Grandparents and Grand Friends through our Mass, morning tea and classroom visits.

We’ve all heard about the importance of positive parent-child relationships in the social and emotional development of children. There are countless research studies and supporting statistics that highlight the many benefits that come from strong parent-child bonds. What isn’t always recognised, however, is the positive impact that a close relationship between a grandparent and grandchild can have on the happiness and wellbeing of the entire family. Simply put, having grandparents around is good for everyone. A healthy connection between a grandchild and his or her grandparent is beneficial to both sides of the relationship, and here’s why:

Grandparents truly impact their grandchildren’s lives.
Studies show that as many as 9 out of 10 adult grandchildren feel that their grandparents influenced their beliefs and values. A child’s perspective of what constitutes a healthy, normal relationship is shaped by the relationship that he or she holds with a grandparent. Through regular contact, a sense of emotional intimacy, and unwavering support, children can experience what a true, positive relationship should look like.

Grandparents can greatly reduce household stress.
A study at Boston College found that “an emotionally close relationship between grandparent and grandchild is associated with fewer symptoms of depression for both generations.” For kids, having grandparents around means having the perfect companions to play with and have fun. Grandparents are some of the best partners when it comes to using creativity and imagination to discover the wonders of life. And in turn, most grandparents truly love their role.

Grandparents have a great amount of experience.
Grandparents are a valuable resource because they have so many stories and experiences from their own lives to share. Often times children will listen to grandparents even when they are not listening to their parents or other adults. Grandparents also offer a link to a child’s cultural heritage and family history. Children understand more of who they are and where they come from through their connection with their grandparents.

Grandparents provide a sense of security.
Especially during tough times, having an extra layer of support can make a big difference in a child’s life. Studies have shown that close grandparent-grandchild relationships during the teenage years are associated with less behavioural and emotional problems and fewer social difficulties with peers. Grandparents offer an extra ear when kids need someone to talk to, because sometimes children just find it easier to open up and share their difficulties and problems with their grandparents.

Grandparents offer an affordable childcare option.
With both parents in many families working outside of the home, it is oftentimes the grandparents that play a vital role in raising today’s youth. According to statistics, roughly 2.7 million grandparents provide for the basic needs of a grandchild, while even more take care of their grandchildren on a regular basis. If they are willing and able, having a grandparent act as either an occasional babysitter or a paid childcare provider gives many parents a great sense of comfort knowing that they are leaving their children in capable and caring hands.

Annual Satisfaction Survey
An annual satisfaction survey of parents, students and staff is being conducted on behalf of all Catholic schools in the Diocese this term. The surveys are designed to gather feedback from parents, staff and students about our school and will be used to inform school improvement. Responses are confidential and individuals can not be identified.

Hats On!
Though it’s still cold, the UV is on the increase so we remind you of the School policy regarding exposure to the sun: Simply stated, from August until May, there is a ‘No Hat – No Play’ policy. Therefore, from next Monday (5^th August) all children must wear their school uniform hats while outside during recess and lunch.

Learning Time
Missing the start of the school day has a real impact on a child. The morning gathering enables us to greet each other as a community and celebrate our efforts and special occasions. However, we work hard to have the classes inside and learning quickly after the bell rings. Classes are usually inside and ready for learning 5 minutes after the bell rings. Those children who are at school before the bell rings (at 8.50am) are usually more settled and focussed in their learning.

NAIDOC Mass
On Friday last week Catholic Schools from across the archdiocese gathered at St Christopher's Cathedral in Manuka, to celebrate NAIDOC Week. Year 6 and Indigenous students represented St Benedict’s. Thanks to Mrs Quirk and Mrs Tomadini for organising our attendance at the Mass and also thanks to Mrs Basedow for taking the students. A small selection of photos is available on the Catholic Education Office website.

Signing In and Signing Out
A reminder to parents and carers if children are arriving late or departing early from school. All students must be signed in or out by their parent or guardian at the office.

Grand Friend Day Mass

This Friday (2^nd August) Year 1/2 Gold will lead our school community in celebrating our Grandparent and Grand friend Day Mass. Mass is held in the St Benedict’s Church from 10:00am. Families are warmly invited to join us for this liturgical celebration. Morning tea will be provided by the families of students in Years 1/2 Gold. Parents are invited to stay after Mass for morning tea and a chat with in the Library. Parents of the hosting class are welcome to bring their child along to the morning tea.

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Feast Day Mass
On Thursday 8th August 10am our school community will be attending Mass to celebrate the Feast Day of St Mary of the Cross MacKillop led by Year 5/6. All families are warmly welcomed to join us for this special occasion.

                      Commonwealth School Banking News - Plastic Tokens

Dear School Bankers
From Term 3, week 4  2019, the School Banking team at St Benedict’s Primary School will no longer be giving out plastic tokens when you make a deposit through school banking. However, you will definitely still earn a token every time you deposit into your bank account each Wednesday – and you will be able to see how many tokens you have at any time by using the Commonwealth Bank Youth app. The number of tokens displayed on this app will always be correct. The app also has some other features and information, which you can read about here: https://www.commbank.com.au/digital-banking/youth-app.html

You will also still be able to order a reward through us once you have made the ten deposits. A rewards form will be forwarded to you via your bank book when you are due to receive a reward. (This has always been the case)

If you have any questions or concerns about this change, please include a note with your bank deposit book next time you deposit through the school.

Catholic Schools NAIDOC Mass
On Friday 26 July 2019 our Indigenous and Year 6 students represented St Benedict's at the Catholic Schools NAIDOC Mass at the Cathedral.  We started off with a smoking ceremony outside.   During the Mass, Himiona, Amiah, Mia and Natalija led the Gospel Procession.

Afterwards we had students from St Patrick's School from Cooma and Saints Peter and Paul from Goulburn join us here in the Hall for the NAIDOC Youth Ministry Session. We played games, had a BBQ and created an artwork together.

We had a very fun day.

Emerson C -  The Australian Internation Dance Team
During the school holidays Emersen competed as part of the Australian International Dance Team at the Commonwealth Cup 2019 at Sun City, South Africa. Not only was it an amazing experience for Emersen and her sisters, but they also came away with a silver medal for their Acro Dance Trio routine and 5th place for their Tap Trio routine. Congratulations Emersen on your amazing achievements.

The School Parents & Friends committee will be meeting on Tuesday, 6th August for their term 3 meeting. It is never too late to join, new members are always welcome and the current committee is eager to have new ideas and suggestions. If you have been thinking about becoming involved in the school in some way, please join our next P&F meeting next Tuesday for an hour and join in as we begin to plan some fun end of year activities!

The Clothing Pool will be open each Tuesday and Thursday between 2.50pm to 3.15pm by appointment. 

The Lost Property box will be emptied during the term and all named items will be returned to students via their class note bags.  

Please let Mrs McRae know at the Front Office if you need something from the Clothing Pool, even if you are unable to make the opening times.  Where possible we will always help.

The Lost Property Box is located in the  canteen area.  Please take some time to go through the box on a weekly basis as the lost property box is overflowing with jumpers and jackets.  These are going to be essential items of your child/rens uniform as the days get colder.

PLEASE ENSURE YOUR CHILD/REN'S CLOTHING IS LABELLED WITH THEIR NAME.

Extra Lost Items
There are a number of personal items and cash that has been handed into the office during the term.  If you are missing any jewellery or accessories please call in and see Mrs McRae at the Front Office.

The St Benedict’s canteen operates as a healthy canteen
as prescribed by the ACT Department of Education.
This does mean additional costs and the need for
more preparation. Mrs Cook continues to do a wonderful
job at limiting the cost and the work involved,
but unfortunately the canteen may be forced to close
without increased patronage and volunteer support.
This is something we are sure we do not want to happen.
