Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome back to Term 4! I hope that your Wellbeing Wednesday today has been a positive experience for your family. In the recent survey there was overwhelming support for its weekly inclusion.
My thanks to the 43 families who responded to the survey from last week. 81% of respondents rate their child’s wellbeing as a 3 or more.
84% rated the remote learning experience from 3 – 5. 21% rated the experience a 5 and 7% rated the remote learning experience a 1. 81% rated their child’s engagement in online learning as a 3 or more. 91% believe the inclusion of ‘Wellbeing Wednesdays’ is important to remote learning, with 60% rating it a 5. 86% believe the daily online meeting is important with 67% believing it is extremely important to their child’s engagement with remote learning and their peers. Likewise, 95% see the online small group meetings as vital.
Comments for ‘Things going well for Remote Learning’ included but not limited to:
- The planning and preparation for this round of online learning has been excellent
- Communication and expectations have been clear
- Any questions have been explained before too long
- The daily encouragement and feedback on the work has made a real difference
- We appreciate the opportunity the teacher takes to personally message our child
- TEAMS meetings are great for daily connection
- Very supported by St Benedict’s through online learning, including understanding when our child needed some time at school
- Good under the circumstances
- Work is well planned, easy set up and log in
- The idea of Wellbeing Wednesdays is fabulous
- It’s a fantastic effort from the school to keep parents onboard with regular notices and updates
- Thanks to all the teachers for your care and hard work
- Kids are happy and able to do most of the work
- Support from the teachers is wonderful
- Well-structured and delivered
Comments for ‘Things that could be done differently in remote learning’ included but not limited to:
- My child feels uncomfortable asking questions on Teams for fear of wasting time
- Some feedbacks are great but some require more feedback on work
- Maths lessons to be done face to face as we are not professional teachers and might get the children confused
- The number of activities that must be completed on a daily basis
- Complexity of the instructions (including multiple pages/slides)
- Balancing work commitments with my child’s online learning
- My child needs constant supervision
- The ICT demand/management and device use is at times challenging
- The formatting of google docs used to make them hard to fill them out
- Daily workload is too high
- Having to wait for someone to let you into Teams sessions. No one lets you in for ages. Just let us join the morning meetings when we want.
The School Staff are working through the survey responses. There are some suggestions that are simply not possible – for example letting the students enter the Teams meetings without having to wait in the lobby – this is explicitly prohibited by Catholic Education. We are conscious that it will not be possible to provide learning that suits each individual student and unique family situation in a remote format. I acknowledge the challenge that remote learning is for our families – just one day at a time – one task at a time.
We apologise for the confusion with the Fathers’ Day mass for some of our families. The mass was streamed on the day and a large percentage of our students and their families joined us for this celebration. In future we will ensure that all students and families have the correct link for our masses.
Please remember that the school remains accessible for children of essential workers. The health advice is that, if possible, students should remain at home. We are proud that we can support the essential workers in our community. I know that parents who need to send their children to school are appreciative of this support.
The advice remains that school will return from the 25th October, Week 4 of Term 4 for our Kindergarten, Year 1, Year 2 and Year 6 students. Our Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 students will return the following Monday 1st November, Week 5 of Term 4. Teachers will continue to plan and provide the remote learning material. As we move closer to the return date, we will provide more information as to how that will occur at St Benedict’s.
Please do not hesitate to reach out via email if I can be of any assistance.
Stay safe and healthy.
God bless.

Swimming Program
Please be advised that, due to COVID restrictions and our current lockdown, the scheduled Junior Primary swimming program cannot go ahead. We will adjust the school fees accordingly.
Summer Uniform
It is customary for our students to begin Term 4 by wearing their summer uniform. It is expected that all students will commence back at school beginning the 25th October with their full summer uniform.
Leaving St Benedict’s
If you anticipate that, your child will leave St Benedict’s at the end of this year, could you please notify the Front Office. We need to begin planning for staffing and class configurations for 2022. Thank you to those who have let us know already, this is very much appreciated. Naturally Year 6 parents need not respond to this request.
Sacrament of Confirmation 2021 Cancelled
It is with deepest regret that we must announce the cancellation of the celebration of the Sacrament of Confirmation 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions. We hope to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation for all candidates currently enrolled in the program during Term 1 of school in 2022. We will continue to pray for your children and families during this time of uncertainty.
Today our school is celebrated a virtual Socktober Day to raise awareness and money for the Kindergarten Centre run by the Good Shepherd sisters in Thailand. In Bangkok the Sisters of the Good Shepherd offer support to mothers and children from disadvantaged areas. They provide education, skills training for young women, health care for families, and early learning for infant children. Their actions speak of the compassion and mercy of Jesus, the Good shepherd, who says, “I have come that they may have life, life in all its fullness.”
Our school community enjoyed virtual Socktober activities with students discovering the wonderful mission work of the Good Shepherd sisters through 360 school tours, as well as reflecting on the rights of a child through literature and prayer.
Thank you to everyone for your generous donations. If you would like to donate, please follow this link:

YouTube
YouTube is intended for users over the age of 13, however the App store rates YouTube as 17+ due to the content that can be found on there.
How can I make YouTube safer?
- Turn on Restricted mode as this restricts the availability of mature content. You will need to set up a Google account to do this.
- Explore YouTube together and see what they like to watch. Make sure your child understands that they can talk to you if they see anything that makes them feel uncomfortable online.
- Ensure your child knows how to report inappropriate content.
YouTube Kids
YouTube recommends that YouTube Kids is used for children under the age of 13 as it provides a safer environment and offers greater controls (you can select the shows that you would prefer them to watch).Find out how to set up the parental controls here: https://support.google.com/youtubekids/answer/6172308?hl=en-GB
You should be over 13 years of age to post videos. Talk to your child about posting videos; do they understand what information they should keep private and what to do if they receive negative comments? YouTube have produced these tips: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2802244?hl=en-GB

Minecraft
Minecraft is rated 7+ or 12+ depending on which version you are playing.
Minecraft remains ever popular and can be a great learning tool that is often used in schools to teach planning skills, recreate famous buildings in 3D and coding. Players use building blocks to create their own worlds.
If your child is playing Minecraft, then you need to ensure that it is being played safely.
What should I be aware of?
- Multiplayer – children can interact with others (including strangers), you can switch this option off within settings.
- Creative or survival mode? Creative mode removes the survival elements of the game (no monsters) so may be a more appropriate mode for your child to play.
- Chat facility – you do have the option to switch this off.
- Block and report players – as with any game that your child plays with others, make sure they know how to block and report players within the game.
In addition, protect your child’s privacy by using a nickname (don’t include their age/birth year) rather than their real name for their profile and chat to your child to make sure that when playing online they know not to tell others personal information such as where they live, what school they go to and their age.
Set up appropriate parental controls
Don’t forget to make sure you have set up appropriate parental controls dependent on the device your child is using to play Minecraft.
